Elective Procedures

Periodontal plastic surgery procedures may be undertaken to change overall appearance of the mouth, to correct recession defects or to prepare the teeth for restorative procedures.

Patients with excessive gingival tissue, or “gummy smiles” may benefit from surgical crown lengthening, or “gum lift” surgical procedures.

Similarly, patients will gum recession may have this corrected in many cases by gum grafting procedures.

Certain medications can the gum tissue to overgrow. These include medications to prevent rejection following organ transplant, some epilepsy medications and some of the hypertension (high blood pressure) medications. These problems can be corrected with a combination of periodontal treatment, surgery and laser therapy.
